We are an independent Sussex-based supplier of unique, luxury rugs that have been lovingly hand crafted by artisans in far flung, rural communities along the ancient Silk Road.
Founded in 2008, by Alex Rees, ‘Rugs of Petworth’ has become established as a highly regarded importer of exquisite handmade rugs, immaculately presented in a stunning showroom in the historic market town of Petworth, West Sussex.

Nestled amongst the independent boutiques and antique shops of Petworth, West Sussex, our stunning showroom boasts an unrivalled selection of over a thousand handmade rugs, runners, carpets and cushions, all sourced directly from the weaving countries of central Asia. Each rug is a unique creation, and our founder Alex selects every one individually on his regular sourcing trips. From loom to room
We are passionate about sustaining the heritage of this ancient cottage industry, which remains largely unchanged today.
All our beautiful rugs are hand woven on looms in the homes of skilled artisans, who have learned the craft passed down over generations. The weaving communities are scattered across remote towns and villages in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal, where weaving is a crucial source of employment, supplementing the livelihoods of these wonderful rural economies.
The combination of the high quality yarn, the sophisticated designs, and the dexterity and skill of the weavers, results in lasting beauty for your home.

Rug Hunter
Owner and Founder Alex Rees, our own ‘Rug Hunter’, has worked in the rug industry since 2001 and travels extensively to the weaving countries to source the highest quality and examples of rugs.
‘We care about the rug trade and everyone involved. It’s a privilege to meet the skilled artisans who create such timeless pieces.The high level skills required in all stages of the process are age-old and handed down through the generations’.
