How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room
Because Size Matters

Choosing the right rug size for your room can completely transform how a space feels.
A rug that is too small can leave furniture looking disconnected, while a well-proportioned rug quietly anchors the entire room. It brings balance, warmth and cohesion — helping the space feel calm, considered and complete.
Many people begin their search simply looking for beautiful handmade rugs that will work within their space — but understanding the correct proportions often makes the final choice far easier.
Rug Size for Living Rooms

In living rooms, the rug should ideally sit beneath the seating area so that at least the front legs of sofas and chairs rest on the rug. This helps visually connect the furniture and makes the room feel more cohesive.
In larger spaces, a large handmade rug that allows all furniture legs to sit comfortably on the rug can create an especially balanced and considered arrangement.
Even in smaller rooms, it’s usually better to allow the rug to extend slightly beyond the main furniture rather than sitting isolated in the centre of the floor.
Rug Size for Dining Rooms

Dining rooms require a little more space around the table.
The rug should be large enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. If chair legs catch on the edge of the rug it quickly becomes uncomfortable and visually unbalanced.
A helpful guideline is to allow around 60–70 cm of rug beyond the edge of the dining table on all sides. This ensures chairs move smoothly while maintaining balanced proportions.
Rug Size for Bedrooms
Bedrooms often benefit from a generous rug that adds warmth and comfort underfoot.
A popular arrangement is to place a large rug beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, allowing it to extend comfortably on both sides and at the foot.
This placement creates a soft landing underfoot in the morning while visually framing the bed within the room.
Alternatively, in smaller rooms or where a lighter approach is preferred, a pair of runners placed either side of the bed can achieve a similar effect while keeping the space feeling open and balanced.
Hallways and Runners

Hallways are ideal places for runners.
A runner should ideally leave a small margin of visible floor along each edge rather than stretching wall to wall. This helps the proportions feel intentional and balanced.
Well-chosen handmade hallway runners introduce colour and texture to transitional spaces while protecting flooring in high-traffic areas.
When in Doubt, Go Larger

If you’re ever unsure about rug size, the simplest advice is often the most reliable:
choose the larger option.
A rug that is slightly too large will almost always look more natural than one that is too small. Larger rugs allow furniture to sit comfortably, help define the space, and create a more considered overall composition.
A well-proportioned rug doesn’t simply sit within a room — it becomes part of the architecture of the space itself.
Finding the Right Rug
Choosing the right size rug is one of the simplest ways to elevate a room.
When the scale is right, the entire space becomes calmer, more balanced and more welcoming.
