Suzani Textiles: Hand Embroidered Silk Pieces for the Home
A closer look at the craft, colour and character behind the design
Alongside our rugs, we’ve always been drawn to pieces that bring a similar sense of craftsmanship and character into a room. Our Suzani textiles are a perfect example — richly embroidered, full of colour, and entirely made by hand.
They are pieces that feel collected rather than simply bought — full of detail, texture, and quiet individuality.

A Tradition Rooted in Craft
Suzani textiles originate from Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan, where embroidery has long been part of everyday life. The word suzani comes from the Persian suzan, meaning needle — a simple reference to the handwork at the heart of each piece.
Today, that same spirit of craftsmanship continues, with each textile still created by hand using time-honoured techniques.

How Suzani Textiles Are Made
Each Suzani textile begins with a design drawn carefully by hand onto a silk base fabric, woven on a jacquard loom.
From there, skilled artisans bring the design to life using silk thread and a traditional hooked needle. It is a slow, meticulous process — one that requires patience, precision, and an experienced hand.
No two pieces are ever exactly the same. Subtle variations in the embroidery and pattern are part of their charm, giving each one its own character and story.

The Beauty of Silk and Stitch
What makes Suzani textiles so distinctive is the combination of rich silk and expressive embroidery.
The silk catches the light beautifully, while the hand-stitched patterns create depth and movement across the surface. The colours feel layered rather than flat, shifting gently depending on the light and the setting.
It is this balance of softness and structure that allows them to sit so comfortably in a wide range of interiors.

How to Use Suzani Textiles in the Home
One of the joys of Suzani textiles is their versatility. While traditionally created as large embroidered panels, today they lend themselves beautifully to a variety of uses within the home.
They can be:
-
Draped loosely over the end of a bed
-
Folded across the back or arm of a favourite chair
-
Used as a wall hanging to bring softness and colour to a space
-
Layered with other textiles to create a more relaxed, collected feel
-
Or made into cushions for a more structured, everyday use
There is no single “correct” way to use them — and that is very much part of their appeal. They adapt easily, adding warmth and character wherever they are placed.
Our collection of hand embroidered Suzani silk cushions can be explored both online and in store, alongside a wider range of Suzani textiles — including larger throws and hangings — in our Petworth showroom.

Layering with Rugs
Suzani textiles sit particularly well alongside our handmade rugs, echoing the same appreciation for craftsmanship while introducing a softer, more fluid decorative layer.
Rather than matching exactly, they tend to work best when they complement — picking up colours, adding contrast, and bringing a sense of ease to the overall scheme.

A Finishing Touch with Character
These are the pieces that often complete a room — not by dominating it, but by adding that final layer of interest and individuality.
They do not need to be perfectly placed or overly styled. In fact, it is often their slightly relaxed, collected feel that makes them so appealing.
Over time, they quietly settle into the room — adding warmth, texture, and a sense of story to the space around them.
